McNaughten Pointe Shares Nursing Home Success Story
January 15, 2020
As we go into the new year, we are motivated by a truly astounding success story. Help us celebrate a going-home goodbye to Leonette:
Leonette first arrived at McNaughten Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation in Columbus, Ohio in January 2019. She was unable to speak or walk and relied on a tube feed for her nutrition.
A few months later, the STNA's taking care of Leonette noticed an incredible change – Leonette was becoming more alert. By April 2019, Leonette was able to communicate and move her limbs. She began working with our physical, occupational, and speech therapy teams to regain her strength and ability to eat.
The best part of Leonette's recovery for her caregivers here at McNaughten Pointe was getting to know her! The smiles on all faces when her team learned that Leonette was waking up were infectious.
Her nursing team quickly became familiar with Leonette's jokes, her favorite music, and her life's story, as told by Leonette herself. Leonette often expressed that she wanted to return to McNaughten Pointe when she finished her recovery so that she could volunteer and help others in a similar position to hers. She never hesitated to introduce herself and offer her help to every new resident that she ran across.
Leonette's improvement never slowed down, and the therapy teams had to work hard to keep up with her! In May 2019, she was able to remove the tracheostomy tube that she had formerly relied on to breathe. In June 2019, Leonette was able to eat entirely on her own again. By September 2019, Leonette was using the bathroom on her own and practicing her walking – and in October 2019, Leonette was able to walk by herself with a walker.
Finally, in the final weeks of 2019, Leonette was going home. Her family joined us for a goodbye celebration, and the happy tears were nonstop. Nearly one year after her arrival, Leonette walked out of McNaughten Pointe to enjoy her new life in South Carolina with her daughter.
Leonette's story inspires all of us here at McNaughten Pointe, and we hope it inspires you too! Her determination to recover, with the help of our skilled therapy and nursing staff, ensured her a safe return home.
We hope to see her again, this time as a volunteer!
